Congress launches exercise to connect with people

BHUBANESWAR: Bolstered by the leadership of Niranjan Patnaik, Congress is leaving no stone unturned to make a noticeable effect on the masses ahead of 2019 elections. The party, which suffered several electoral defeats since 2000 and constantly remained in news for infighting or exodus, has steadily started the ground work and launched massive exercise to connect with people. It is evident from party and public meetings organised almost every day in different districts.

Anil Chaudhary, one of the three All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretaries for Odisha, said the uninterrupted people-connect exercise will continue till December this year. On Friday, Congress organised a huge meeting of party workers in Nuapada district. Niranjan and Chaudhary among others addressed the gathering. Two other AICC secretaries—Rudra Raju, Shaikh Mastan Vali—too have been touring different parts of the state to boost the morale of workers.

“We are first organising meetings every day in different districts. I am holding one-to-one interaction with several workers and receiving their suggestions. Then we will cover blocks, panchayats and booths. A number of our central leaders are scheduled to come in coming days to address workers in districts,” Chaudhary told TOI.

In the party and public meetings, senior leaders have been giving pep talks and spewing venom against ruling BJD and BJP. “We are galvanising our grassroots workers to remain united and sensitise voters about BJD government’s misrule in the state. In the meetings, we are also targetting BJP at Centre. The saffron party failed to accord due importance to Odisha,” said Pradeep Majhi, a working president of the party.

Jharsuguda MLA Naba Kishore Das, who is also a working president, said the party is trying to understand the reason of people rejecting Congress. “Our motive is to reach out to the masses and known from them about their stand towards Congress. We are trying to know our faults. We want to know why people kept Congress out of power since 2000. Efforts are being made to win over the hearts of the people,” Das said.

Recently, Niranjan admitted that his party was dethroned in 2000, largely because of the arrogance of leaders and allegation of corruption as well as nexus with criminals. He also said loss of Congress came as gain for BJD and BJP in the state. “Turning around the fortunes of the party (Congress) in Odisha is going to be a huge challenge. But it is not impossible,” Niranjan said. Sources said the party is likely to finalize candidates for at least 50 out of total 147 assembly seats within a month. At present, Congress has 15 MLAs in the state assembly.

BJD said Congress has been rejected by people. “We do not think the daily meetings of Congress will yield any result for them. People of Odisha were fed-up with corruption and hooliganism during Congress regime. That is the reason why they supported BJD and have been electing BJD because of the incumbent government’s good works since 2000,” said a BJD spokesperson.
