Rahul Gandhi says rapes are a political issue but Modi talks of bullet trains

Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'don't politicise rape' comment in wake of the Unnao and Kathua rape cases, Congress president Rahul Gandhi today said, "Are rape cases not political issues? Atrocities against women is absolutely a political and a national issue."

Addressing the media with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and senior party leaders on the last day of campaigning for the state's election, Gandhi added, "Modi does not want to raise fundamental political issues. Rape cases are of course a political issue."

The prime minister had commented on the two rape cases in April this year, at the 'Bharat Ki Baat, Sabke Saath' diaspora event in London.

In face of extreme criticism from the Opposition over the Kathua and Unnao incidents of rape, the PM had then urged the Opposition to stop playing politics over sexual violence and sent out a strong message of zero tolerance.

Responding to a question, he had said, "When a minor is raped its terrible for the entire society and is an aberration, but what is worse is keeping count of incidents of rapes in your government and mine. It is terrible... So when girls are asked where they were and what they were up to... one should also ask their son where he was..."

PM Modi has repeated the same comment during a few of his Kanataka rallies, saying cases of rapes should be politicised.

Rahul Gandhi, while responding to a question today also added that the prime minister likes to discuss bullet train and other issues but does not like to discuss fundamental issues.

The election in Karnataka will be held on May 12 in 223 constituencies, out of 224 of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly while the counting of votes and announcement of result will take place on May 15.
