Kamal Haasan Likely to Float Political Party by September End

New Delhi: Veteran actor Kamal Haasan is set to take the plunge into politics with the likely launch of a political outfit by the end of September. According to Indian Express, Hasaan – who over the last couple months has made his views known about the deteriorating state of politics in Tamil Nadu – has set his eyes on the local body elections, with over 4,000 candidates, which are expected to be held in November.

While an official announcement hasn’t been made yet, a close aide to the actor told Indian Express that “the upcoming local body elections have made it a necessity for him to step in,” and that the announcement of the political party is likely to come in a few days.

Another source close to Hassan said that the 62-year-old actor believes that there is a political vacuum in the state and that it is crucial for him to make his entry at this point before any major alliances are forged by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) or the warring factions of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

“He is busy meeting key faces of his fans’ groups besides sharing his ideas and draft papers for the new party with people whom he respects,” a source was quoted by Indian Express as saying.

The actor had earlier this month hinted his intentions of entering politics after a meeting with Pinarayi Vijayan, the Kerala chief minister and CPI(M) politburo member, on September 1.

According to the Indian Express report, while the actor’s entry into politics doesn’t come as a surprise, what has caught many off guard is his plans of launching a new party instead of joining an alliance – a move that is being viewed as a threat to the DMK.
