Political parties plan massive protest against Corporation

Also plan to file a public interest litigation against the civic body

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Congress, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a few other parties have decided to continue their protest against the civic body.

After an all-party meeting at the Congress’ office here on Monday, DMK MLA N. Karthik said that the parties were opposed to the civic body’s move to revise water connection deposit, reassess properties for property tax revision, levy garbage collection fee and other similar measures as it had failed to provide basic amenities.

After Monday’s protest in front of the Corporation’s divisional office at Thudiyalur, the parties would hold their protest on October 12, when parties from the Coimbatore North and South Assembly constituencies would stage a protest in front of the Corporation’s main office at Town Hall. Thereafter, the parties would meet the people within the Corporation limits, explain the problem by holding street-corner meetings and distributing handbills. If the Corporation did not heed to their demands, they would hold a massive protest by drawing people from all the 100 wards on November 3rd.

Even if that did not work, they would escalate the issue at the State-level by inviting respective party leaders to lead protests in Coimbatore. Meanwhile, they would also explore the option of filing a public interest litigation against the Corporation’s measures, the MLA added.

Congress District president Mayura S. Jayakumar, DMK’s North District Secretary in-charge Muthusamy, CPI(M) District Secretary V. Ramamoorthy, CPI leader M. Arumugham, MDMK leader R.R. Mohankumar and representatives from other parties also participated.

Protest staged

Cadre of the DMK, Congress, CPI, CPI(M) and a few other political parties staged a protest near the Coimbatore Corporation’s divisional office in Thudiyalur on Monday. According to sources, CPI(M) State Secretary G. Ramakrishnan, who led the protests, wanted the Corporation to give up its move to levy new taxes. He also wanted the Corporation to take steps to control the spread of dengue.

Mr. Karthik said the Corporation was burdening people by levying new taxes.
